Option 1
Write either a functional or a literary analysis of Romeo and Juliet, following the guidelines in Writing About Theatre.

On p. 53, the authors define a literary analysis as "an examination of the play's themes, images, language, context or some other defining characteristic of the work." If you choose this option, limit yourself to one main subject, and follow it throughout the play. (Example on p. 68 - 69)

On the same page, the authors define a functional analysis as "mining the text for the information and inspiration required to develop a production plan." If you choose this option, imagine yourself as the director of a new production of Romeo and Juliet. Your functional analysis will guide the actors in achieving your individual, original vision of the play. (Example on p. 66 - 67) In this analysis you do not describe the production but instead guide the acting company through your unique vision of the play.

Both types of analysis require detailed and relevant quotation from the text

Option 2
Throughout the reading of Romeo and Juliet, we've been looking at how character is displayed in language, action and structure.

Either:

Analyze the development of your character throughout the play, paying very close attention to language, themes and patterns in your character's progress through the play

Or:

Choose a character whose image for you has changed since we began reading the text and explain why and how your assessment of that character has changed.
